Former official says she warned White House about Flynn

Obama Warned Trump About Michael Flynn During Oval Office MeetingMore

Yates' concern was that Russian Federation created a "compromise situation" where the national security adviser could be blackmailed.

Obama had cautioned against Flynn, whom he fired in 2014 as head of the defense intelligence agency, due to his poor record in administration and personnel management.

"This was a problem because" it "created a compromised situation" where the national security adviser "essentially could be blackmailed by the Russians". General Flynn worked as the head of the Military Intelligence Agency (DIA), until he was sacked by President Barack Obama in 2014, reportedly because of his chaotic management.

However, it took 18 days from the second meeting - and only after the news was leaked and published by the Washington Post - for the White House to fire Flynn.

She is expected to tell the Senate Judiciary Committee that she explicitly warned Trump's team in January that Flynn could be compromised by his communications with Russia's USA ambassador.

Yates testified on Monday to a Senate subcommittee that she spoke to the White House on January 26 about Flynn, and again on January 27.

Yates declined to go into specific details, which she did mention were classified, but she confirmed what led up to the firing of Michael Flynn in February. "Just because someone gives you a heads-up does not mean you immediately jump the gun and take action".

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer acknowledged that President Obama did make clear in November that he was "not a fan" of Michael Flynn.

Yates said Trump's travel ban, which targeted several Muslim-majority counties, was "unlawful", and added, "All arguments have to be based on truth".

Yates testified that she told the White House that the Russians also knew what Flynn had done and that he had misled the vice president and others.

Yates told a Senate Judiciary subcomittee that she didn't know whether the White House ended up looking at that evidence because she was sacked for refusing to enforce President Donald Trump's initial travel ban shortly after she spoke with McGahn by phone. He retired when Trump took office.

"I have not been", Clapper said.

"When you look at this compared to other instances, the idea that in 11 days, a review was conducted, the President acted decisively", Spicer said.

While Mr. Trump appeared to support Clapper in his statements that there was "no evidence" of collusion between the Russian government and Mr. Trump calling it "a hoax" and a "taxpayer funded charade", the president lauded Yates for making the "fake media extremely unhappy", saying her testimony provided nothing but "old news".

She said Monday she did not - and that she had revealed no classified information herself. The president made, ultimately, the right decision and I think he was proven that - that - that.
