Motorbike collision wipes Orica-Scott and Team Sky out of Giro

Giro d'Italia: Gorka Izagirre wins stage eight amid drama for home riders

Team Sky's Geraint Thomas and Orica-Scott's Adam Yates were both brought down in a crash at the foot of the climb when a stationary police motorbike at the side of the road caused a big pile-up.

Welshman Thomas and Spanish team-mate Mikel Landa, who were Team Sky's joint leaders for the Giro, suffered major time losses after the crash inside the final 15 kilometres of the 149km stage from Montenero di Bisaccia to Blockhaus.

Thomas and Landa bravely got back on their bikes to complete the stage.

Quintana stamped his authority on the Giro when he claimed the overall lead by winning the first big mountain stage, while defending champion Vincenzo Nibali was dealt a big knock when he cracked on the climb.

Movistar's Quintana came over the finish line 23 seconds ahead of Frenchman Thibaut Pinot and Dutchman Tom Dumoulin, to wrest the race lead from Luxembourg's Bob Jungels. Italian Giovanni Visconti (Bahrein-Merida) took second place, five seconds behind with Spaniard Luis León Sánchez (Astana) finishing third, 10 seconds off the pace.

"I've had worse crashes", said Thomas.

The overall contenders and their key support riders were racing for position ahead of the climb of the Blockhaus, the group spread out across the road, when a rider in front of Thomas hit a police motorcycle that was parked at the roadside. My shoulder popped out as well.

"I'm a bit angry at the minute".

Thomas added: "I had felt good and then I crashed and my race was over".

"I showed that I'm happy with my legs and the legs of my teammates", Quintana said. "That's most important for now".

Quintana was undoubtedly the big victor on Sunday as he pulled clear of all of his rivals, albeit with the help of the motorbike's intervention, while Nibali is still well placed to retain his title.

Quintana dedicated his victory to 2011 Giro champion Michele Scarponi, who died after a collision with a van while training last month.

Quintana, who won the 2014 Giro, went on to ride away from his main rivals up the final climb and finished nicely clear of Pinot, who edged out Dumoulin in a sprint for second.

Monday is a rest day in the race, which resumes on Tuesday with a Stage 10 time trial over 39.8km in the Sagrantino wine-growing region.
