Emmy-Winning actor Powers Boothe dead at 68

The Associated Press reports that Boothe was known for "his villain roles in TV's Deadwood, and in the movies Tombstone, Sin City and The Avengers".

Other turns came in Oliver Stone's Nixon, as Alexander Haig, as a sheriff in Stone's U Turn and was unforgettable as the evil, gun-toting Curly Bill Brocius in Tombstone.

Boothe would go on to win an Emmy for his performance, but in order to collect the award, the actor had to cross the picket line of a Screen Actors Guild strike.

Boothe's friend and fellow actor Beau Bridges tweeted a tribute to the late actor on Sunday.

Often, when an actor is credited with a strong, masculine name like "Powers Boothe", you expect that it's probably a stage name he chose for himself to replace something less screen-friendly.

"Powers Boothe is dynamic as gritty coach Jim Van Scoyoc, who was forced out of his job by the superintendent pushing for consolidation with fictional Madison Community School (Benton Community in real life)", read a review of the movie by Gazette entertainment writer Diana Nollen. He later starred in The Avengers as Gideon Malick in 2012, before landing a regular role as the character in Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. from 2015-16. In recent years, he had a regular role as tycoon Lamar Wyatt in the country music drama "Nashville".

A memorial in honour of the film icon is being considered.

Born to a farming family in the west Texas town of Snyder, Boothe eventually left for NY to pursue an acting career.

Boothe, who grew up on a farm in the Lone Star State, began his acting career in the theater, playing in a number of Shakespearean productions including Henry IV.

Boothe was known for portraying rival brothel owner Cy Tolliver on three seasons of Deadwood, where he became the town nemesis to Ian McShane's Al Swearengen. Donations can be made to the Gary Sinise Foundation, which honors the nation's veterans and first responders.

"I loved acting with you #powersboothe you were a gentlemen and a great actor #rip #RedDawn #Wolverines", wrote Lea Thompson.

He's survived by wife Pam, daughter Parisse and son Preston.
