Upcoming Disney Movie Held Ransom By Hackers, CEO Says

Disney chief Bob Iger said on Monday hackers claiming to have access to one of the company's unreleased movies were demanding a "huge" ransom, according to United States media reports.

Now, Disney are allegedly working with federal investigators to see if the hackers follow through with their threats.

The hackers have threatened to release the first five minutes of the film and subsequently in 20-minute chunks until the ransom is paid, The Hollywood Reporter says.

Iger's response? Basically... "Come at me".

Iger made no mention of the title in question, but said that hackers are asking for a large bitcoin payment to keep the film under wraps. But a person with knowledge of the situation who was not authorized to comment said the movie that was hacked was the new "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequel.

But according to multiple reports, hackers are threatening to leak a major film owned by Disney, and sources tell Deadline that the movie is Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales. Disney is set to release "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" on Friday, which would make for some uncanny irony if it were indeed the one.

A spokesman for Disney didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

The entire episode is eerily similar to the recent high-profile leak of Netflix's "Orange Is the New Black".

Netflix recently had the same issue with a hacker released 10 episodes of Orange Is The New Black after their demands weren't met.
