Twin Teens in Car When Jordan Edwards Killed by Cop Speak Out

The U.S. Justice Department has begun an investigation prompted by the fatal shooting of Jordan Edwards, a black 15-year-old boy, by Roy Oliver, a white suburban Dallas police officer.

Lawyers for Shaunkeyia Stephens filed the request to intervene in the lawsuit Tuesday. The probe was prompted by the April 29th fatal shooting of Jordan Edwards by Balch Springs police Officer Roy Oliver, who was sacked and charged with murder.

Several anti-violence advocates and faith leaders including Mothers Against Police Brutality, NAACP, Faith in Texas, Faith For Texas, Faith Forward, and others stood in solidarity with the Edwards family, during a press conference after their meeting with the District Attorney.

Oliver was booked on a charge of murder and was released on a $300,000 surety bond, according to jail records.

Oliver fired a rifle at a auto full of teenagers leaving a party, fatally shooting Edwards who was a passenger in the vehicle.

Like Ferguson, Balch Springs has a small white minority in its population but an overwhelming white majority in its police department.

Describing their tragic loss as "inescapable", Edwards' family added, "What we desire, only second to having our beloved Jordan back, is justice for Jordan".

According to Reuters, Brittany Dunn, a spokesperson for the Dallas County District Attorney's Office confirmed in an email on Thursday that the Justice Department had opened an investigation into the shooting, which would run separately from that of the District Attorney's office. Video revealed that Oliver fired as the teens' auto drove away from police, contradicting an earlier account that claimed the cop shot as the vehicle moved toward him in reverse.

Police now say the vehicle carrying a Black ninth grader was driving away from them when they shot into it, rather than towards them.

"We believe a lot has been done in this case", said Johnson. I just don't now that I'm so convinced that the path to that conviction... Maximus told the station the arrest shows "we're going in the right direction to get justice for everything that's going on, and especially for Jordan".

Merritt welcomed the update while emphasizing the need for further investigation. Jenkins, the chief executive in Dallas County, called the death of Edwards "every parent's worst nightmare".
