Ailes resigned from Fox News in July 2016 amid allegations of sexual harassment.

Ailes - whose background lay in TV, not politics - contributed countless visual nips and tucks.

Steve Papalas, 77, took a government class with Ailes in the 7th grade in 1952, the year Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower ran for president.

The Republican success can not be totally attributed to Ailes' network, of course, but there was broad agreement Thursday on both sides of the aisle that Ailes' conservative network was a major factor. On the air, Fox News churned out a steady diet of segments that demonized modern women for believing they are full human beings who deserve equality: There were attacks on contraception, celebrations of street harassment and allegations that closing the gender pay gap would lead to the destruction of society. O'Reilly has denied those accusations.

According to the medical examiner, Ailes died of suffering from a subdural hematoma, caused by excessive internal cerebral bleeding due to a fall, in the bathroom of his Florida home, last week. He was taken to a hospital by attending paramedics. He founded Fox News in 1996 and built it into the nation's long-running No. 1 cable news network.

"The history of cable television will have a very big chapter on Roger Ailes".

If Stone was the jockey, Ailes was the trainer, not just for Trump but for Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Rudy Giuliani: in the background, but calling the shots.

And when Ailes died this morning, he left an America perfectly in his image, frightened out of its mind and pouring its money hand over fist into television companies, who are gleefully selling the unraveling of our political system as an entertainment product.

As recently at last fall's election, and after his career at Fox had ended, Ailes reportedly advised President Trump in preparation for debates.

CLEVELAND Longtime Fox News CEO Roger Ailes built his fame and fortune in TV and politics in the power corridors of NY and Washington, but classmates who knew him growing up in OH say he was down-to-earth and never forgot his Midwestern roots. But as ABC News Chief Legal Analyst Dan Abrams told the New York Times a year ago: "Fox was cleaning our clocks in the ratings" when Abrams took over as general manager of MSNBC in 2006. Over on Fox News, the day was filled with emotional tributes, while former network star Bill O'Reilly penned a sympathetic obituary for USA Today.

'More than anyone, Roger knew how to frame the message and communicate it to the masses, ' Huckabee said. "The GOP has long had a problem speaking to people beyond the boardroom and country club. He was a genius". "Roger was my best friend, the most wonderful loving husband and father to our son, Zachary". Roger Ailes experienced that hatred and it killed him.

"There's no question there's tremendous carryover from the Fox News audience base to supporters of Donald Trump", said Swing. Concluding that the camera would never warm to Nixon any more than would the media establishment, Ailes struck a winning formula by packaging him in comfortably staged TV town-hall meetings where a hand-picked collection of "everyday people" appeared to clearly like him. So I dismissed those complaints, even though, when I thought about it, I realized only a few conservatives pounded typewriters in the newsrooms I was familiar with. "RIP", Ingraham wrote on Twitter. To play a different game, all of us - media, politicians and citizens - must reject the Ailes formula and change what we think is important to cover, say, listen to, read and watch.

He was a brilliant broadcaster, playing a huge role in America's media over the past 30 years.

"Roger and I shared a big idea which he executed in a way no one else could have", Murdoch said.

"Roger was a great patriot who never ceased fighting for his beliefs", he added.

One longtime friend, evangelical Christian leader Ralph Reed, affectionately called Ailes "master of the universe" on Thursday, while former President George H.W. Bush tweeted that he might not have been elected without the Fox chief.
