Unemployment rates hit record lows in 3 states

The state's labor force grew by nearly 1,900, to more than 2.3 million people. The April unemployment rate for OH, at 5.0 percent, did not change from April 2016.

According to a press release from Ohio Department Job and Family Services, Ohio's unemployment rate was 5.0 percent in April 2017, down from 5.1 percent in March 2017.

During the past year, nonagricultural employment in the state has grown by 5,500 jobs. The most recent estimate, for February, shows 1.134 million Australians working fewer hours than they would like.

The April rate was two-tenths of a point lower than last April's rate of 3.2 percent and was well below the national rate of 4.4 percent last month. U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics figures show the IN labor force increased by more than 4,800 IN April.

Solid hiring nationwide led unemployment rates to touch record lows in three US states last month.

The three industry sectors with the largest employment gains from April 2016 to April 2017, not seasonally adjusted, were retail trade (+16,100), government (+14,800) and construction (+13,700).

The industry posting the biggest jobs decline was professional and business services, which lost 3,000 jobs, to 215,700, down 1.4 percent. In the last 12 months, the labor force has grown by 37,733 people, and employment gains totaled 55,856. "This preliminary data was ultimately revised due to the inclusion of more data such that no over-the-month increase occurred as detailed in the previously referenced historical data", Barewicz wrote.

Construction and mining posted the largest jobs gain, 2,800, to 62,500, up 4.7 percent. The state also added 1,200 jobs in that timeframe.

Since April of a year ago, construction has registered the largest expansion, adding 6,300 jobs, two-thirds of them specialty trade contractors.

However, while the overall jobs market is showing signs of strength, more of the overall rise in employment has been driven by part-time jobs, which have climbed by 63,000 since the start of the year, after adding 49,000 in April.

Nevada, Hawaii and North Dakota enjoyed the stronger percentage job gains last month, while IN experienced a loss of 11,300 jobs, or a decline of 0.4 per cent. Since 1990, the long-run average of unemployment rates is 2 percentage points higher in rural areas (8.4 percent, as opposed to 6.4 percent).
