His family even disowned him because he supported a coup against Turkey's president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. "He's a dictator. He's the Hitler of our century".

Kanter followed Saturday afternoon with a tweet saying all is good and he will give a press conference tomorrow in NY.

Kanter is a native of Turkey and was traveling from Romania from Indonesia, according to ESPN, as part of a global tour with his charitable foundation.

Thunder forward Enes Kanter is spending at least a portion of his 25th birthday detained in a Romanian airport on Saturday.

"What's up world, just wanted to say we are in Romania", Kanter said in the video.

Kanter has been a vocal critic of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in the past. "They have been holding us here for hours by these two police", he began in the video.

Kanter, a staunch supporter of the controversial cleric Fethullah Gulen, announced in August 2016 that he would be changing his name to support the cleric, who is now facing possible extradition to Turkey over his alleged involvement in the failed coup attempt.

In the video, Kanter, who appears to be in a terminal waiting area, asks for prayers for his situation.

Prior to Kanter leaving Romania, National Basketball Players Association executive director Michele Roberts told the Sports Business Journal that the union was "in conversations with the State Department as well as the league" regarding Kanter.

An Oklahoma City Thunder basketball star is stuck overseas after the Turkish government reportedly canceled his passport. He was selected with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft by the Utah Jazz before getting traded to the Thunder in February 2015.

The 6-foot-11, 245-pound Kanter averaged 14.3 points and 6.7 rebounds in 72 games this season for the Thunder.
