TX Commends School Choice Measure for Special Needs Students

Texas set to pass transgender bathroom law for schools

Texas set to pass transgender bathroom law for schools

The measure formally cleared the House Monday, sending the modified bill to the Senate, which should easily support it. Texas' legislative session ends May 29, but that's plenty of time - even if the bathroom bill is scaled-back enough to only affect the state's roughly 5.3 million public school students, and not the general public.

Republican Rep. Chris Paddie authored the hotly debated language, saying it had "absolutely no intent" to discriminate. "Every parent, or anyone who's been in school knows that kids are often bullied", said Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa in a statement following the Sunday vote on SB 2078. "Separate but equal is not equal at all", she said. And it's not, it's not", said Representative Joe Moody (D-El Paso) " Because who it's going to impact is one group of people.

"We don't want someone to be forced to take a student they're not set up to handle", Taylor said.

Hundreds of businesses and several Texas chambers of commerce, celebrities and performers, tourism groups and events and sports organizations including the National Basketball Association, the NFL and the NCAA have spoken out against legislation targeting transgender people for discrimination.

"This is a bill that really needs to be passed because of the safety of our judges", Smithee said in brief discussion of the bill on the House floor as Kocurek and Texas Supreme Court Justice Nathan Hecht looked on from the gallery.

If the House passes the measure, it will return to the Senate for consideration of changes made since it was in that chamber.

By focusing on schools, Republicans could presumably thwart some of those concerns by letting stand local nondiscrimination ordinances - some on the books for decades in the state's biggest cities - that are meant to allow transgender residents to use bathrooms that match their gender identity.

Did CPS learn nothing earlier this month when two foster teens being housed in a Harris County office building ran away from state workers?

On Sunday, few Republicans defended Paddie's measure before the vote, but several Democrats tore into the amendment as a throwback to the state's history of racial discrimination, particularly Jim Crow-era laws that mandated separate bathrooms for black and white Texans. After that, it will go to the Texas Senate.

Legislation that would give low-level criminal offenders a "second chance" by allowing them to shield their rap sheets from public disclosure was approved in final form Monday by the Texas Senate. The bill would prevent trans students from using multi-occupancy restrooms that correspond with their gender identity, unless no other student is present.

"Fresh off its passage of the most anti-immigrant legislation in the nation, the Texas legislature this weekend turned its attention to targeting women and children", said Terri Burke, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas, in a press release.
