Canada's opposition Conservatives pick new leader

She captured seven per cent of the vote on the first ballot and never gained more than eight, dropping off at the 10th round of counting.

Regina-Qu'Appelle MP Andrew Scheer came out the victor with 50.95 per cent of the vote in the 13th ballot just beating Quebec MP Maxime Bernier who finished with 49.05 per cent.

It's one subject Scheer knows well having served as the Speaker of the House of Commons under the last Conservative government. In Provencher, Scheer led throughout the ranked ballot process, which also showed solid local support for Bernier and Pierre Lemieux.

"Winning in a democracy is finding that fine balance between blowing things up and too much inertia", he said.

Scheer's economic agenda includes tax cuts and opposition to Trudeau's plans for a national carbon price.

Jeneroux said the leader will be back in Edmonton soon.

Bernier was bolstered in late April when front-runner Kevin O'Leary, a reality TV star and businessman, withdrew from the race and threw his support behind him.

"We're obviously disappointed", Fildebrandt said in a phone interview on Saturday.

"My voters made the strongest moves to Andrew versus Max". We led in Alberta.

"That means right across the country we are starting to attract younger people", he said.

Though, he added he has a new found respect for candidates who spend months running campaigns.

Though voting has been underway for weeks and most ballots had already been cast - the victor will be announced Saturday night - some candidates still used their speeches Friday to make last-minute plays for votes.

"I reject the idea that in order to beat the Liberals we need to be more like them".

"I think it was good because both of them realized they would have to defend those policies and argue those policies before the party and the caucus and I think both of them. will have important contributions to make to the forthcoming policy discussions".

The 38-year-old will now lead the party- Canada's official opposition - against Mr Trudeau's Liberals in the 2019 general election, although he now has the hard challenge of uniting his party first.

Scheer also said that as prime minister he would resume Canada's involvement in fighting Islamic State in the Middle East.

After a lengthy winnowing of the field of 13 candidates, the 12th-ballot results Saturday eliminated likeable Ontario MP Erin O'Toole with 21.26 per cent of the points, leaving Bernier in first place with 40.38 per cent and Scheer a very close second place with 38.36 per cent.

Conservative Party of Canada supporters gather in Toronto on May 27 for the leadership vote.

Harper won't be attending the weekend leadership event, determined to leave the spotlight to whomever inherits the party he helped found.

The ad makes no mention of Scheer or the Conservatives, in contrast to the aggressive personal attack ads the Tories launched immediately after Trudeau took the helm of the Liberal party in 2013, which asserted he was "in over his head".

Former federal colleagues and current provincial politicians weighed in, thanking Ambrose for her time as leader.
