Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel wins 2017 Monaco Grand Prix

The outcome of the Monaco Grand Prix leaves Vettel 25 points ahead of Hamilton in the Drivers Championship, and Ferrari 17 points ahead of Mercedes in the Constructors.

"We're going to have a very fun night", he said.

"I did what I came to do today, didn't make any silly mistakes, didn't damage the auto, got those points and I'd like to think at the end of the season those points are going to be valuable".

Ricciardo jumped ahead of Bottas, but Ricciardo's Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen felt far from happy to be back in fifth and used an expletive over race radio.

Hamilton says Mercedes is not yet at a point where it would help one driver over the other when they are running one-two.

Ferrari did not even win a race past year, but the Italian manufacturer has turned the tables on Mercedes.

The Finn set a time of 1:12.178 on the notoriously treacherous circuit to secure his first pole position in nine years ahead of his Ferrari teammate Sebastian Vettel in second.

While Ferrari can argue it was covering off the threat of the early-stopping Verstappen and Bottas, Raikkonen ultimately lost out on what would have been a deserved first victory since 2013. The Mercedes driver believes that deficit is going to be even harder to overhaul if Ferrari is favouring Vettel.

"I'm feeling great to be here and out of the hospital atmosphere", said Bourdais, who told The Associated Press on Saturday that he refused to show up in a wheel chair. "It's still second place but obviously it doesn't count a lot".

When he came back out, Vettel was in front of Raikkonen while Ricciardo - second here a year ago - had jumped ahead of Bottas. I can understand why he's upset.

"I was able to use that window to come ahead and after that I could control the race".

Alonso and Rossi spent the next 15 laps drafting, swapping the lead back and forth in a bid to save fuel, with the McLaren man sitting as race leader when the red flag was thrown for the crash between Scott Dixon and Jay Howard on Lap 52.

Six races into the new campaign, the Ferrari driver is no longer Formula One's Mr.

"But the more races we do, the more we learn and the stronger we get".

The Italian team's strategy also came under question in the German Grand Prix in 2010, when Felipe Massa was instructed to let Fernando Alonso aside to claim victory. "Today it was a really exciting race".

The racing then settled down until lap 61 of 78 when a Safety Car was deployed for a collision between McLaren's Jenson Button and Sauber's Pascal Wehrlein.

The impact flipped Wehrlein's vehicle onto its side and up against the barrier.

After a few minutes, the German driver jumped out of the vehicle.

Honda's engine concerns were justified when smoke began to seep from the rear of Hunter-Reay's auto, sparking another caution on Lap 138.

Other retirements included Nico Hulkenberg's Renault, whose gearbox expired early in the race, as well as Marcus Ericsson & Stoffel Vandoorne.
