Ontario to raise minimum wage and update labour laws, premier says

The Labour movement in Ontario is advocating for wide-ranging changes to the Employment Standards Act and Labour Relations Act to make sure every job in Ontario is a decent job, and that it is easier for workers to join and keep a union.

Working people from across Ontario have shared their lived experiences of insecurity, intimidation, precarity and poverty with the Special Advisors and with their MPPs.

Clark, meanwhile, said Tuesday afternoon the Liberal government had yet to table the bill that will aim to implement all these changes, and as such he had little on which to comment.

Interestingly, one thing the report did not mention was increasing the minimum wage. "That's millions of people, many of them supporting a family on a wage that just doesn't go far enough", she said to cheers from the assembled crowd at the campaign-style event.

Making employee scheduling fairer, including requiring employees to be paid for three hours of work if their shift is cancelled within 48 hours of its scheduled start time.

The minimum wage would go up in phases, from $11.40 an hour now to $11.60 in October. The OFL will be engaging with the legislative committee and MPPs over the summer to ensure that the details of the proposed legislation will yield the desired outcome: delivering stability and fairness for all workers in Ontario. Then, the government plans to bump it up to $14 an hour on January 1, 2018 and $15 the following year. Instead of getting two weeks of vacation, workers will be able to get three weeks of paid vacation a year after five years with a company.

All of these latest treats are nice, and who wouldn't want them, but how is she going to pay for all this when she is already extending our payments for her energy "mistake" to 29 years.

The Ontario government is raising the minimum wage without taking heed of the move's economic impact, the head of the area's biggest business group warned Tuesday. But businesses faced with increased wage costs could respond by hiring fewer workers or raising prices.

Flynn said even though some changes - including the $15 minimum wage - would take effect after the next election, they're not dependent on the Liberals being re-elected.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses (CFIB) and a new coalition of employer groups that includes the Ontario Chamber of Commerce issued statements objecting to the proposals. "Small businesses, who don't share the larger profit margins of big business, will be forced to make hard choices, including cutting hours and jobs".

But Flynn effectively accepted the argument made by retailers, and especially restaurant owners, that the lower minimum wages are necessary, because young workers aren't as productive as older, more experienced ones, and because liquor servers supplement their wages with tips. "But we know that the sector going through the most changes right now is retail because many purchases are being made online, and that money is going to China or the United States or wherever a product is being sold online".
