The Banks include BMO, CIBC, Banque Nationale, Scotiabank, Desjardins, President's Choice Financial, ATB Financial and Canadian Tire Financial Services.

There is also a partnership with leading payment platforms, processors, and technology to help drive support for Android Pay in Canada.

Android Pay offers a fast, simple and secure way for shoppers to use their Android phones with the use of a digital card for purchases in-app and in-store without pulling out a physical wallet.

A lot of Google products and services aren't available in Canada as soon as they are out in the United States, which for Canadians must be even more frustrating than for people in other parts of the world because of the geographical proximity of the two countries. Support for Interac debit cards will start rolling out on Monday, and support for American Express and cards and Tangerine will come this summer. Both of those missing banks support Apple Pay, so it's more a matter of missing agreements than any kind of technical limitation. It can also be used for in-app purchases. The noteworthy absentees from this list of supporting financial institutions are RBC and TD, which are the largest of Canada's "Big Five" banks.

Android Pay transactions are protected using a system called tokenization. As shocking as it might be that Canada hasn't had Android Pay until today, I think I'm more shocked that the image above from Google doesn't feature poutine. To use it, once you register your card you simply wake your device, authenticate using one of your phone login methods, and tap it to a payment terminal. "You can add multiple eligible cards and select which card you want to use before you pay, so you can always enjoy the best deals available".
