Intel's new Core i9 sounds like a monster

Intel core i9 - At Computex a year ago, Intel unveiled its first 10-core consumer CPU, the company's move into the world of a "mega-tasking".

Intel talks about numerous same benefits delivered by its Core-X series processors that AMD visited with the Ryzen launch.

Intel also argued that the new 8th generation processor will have 30 % more performance boost over the 7th generation core processor.

The insane 18-core i9 processors in the new Core X series are not everything that Intel has revealed today.

Performance-enhancing additions in the new chips include up to 10% better multithread performance and 15% better single-thread performance over the previous generation of chips, Intel said.

If that extreme price is putting you off, the Core i9 Extreme line is also available in cheaper 16, 14, 12, and 10-core versions. With full support for Turbo Boost Max 3.0 technology, the chip offers overclocking support and features 44 PCI-e Gen 3.0 lanes.

New too is the Intel X299 chipset to go with the Core X-series.

Clock speed slightly above 4 Ghz.

At a time where 4 cored processors on PC are considered a standard, an 18 cored processor would change the game completely.

The Core-X lineup consists of the base model which has 4 cores all the way to the top with the i9 which has 18 cores and 36 threads - a first for any desktop processor.

Starting from the base model, the Intel Core i5-7640X comes with 4 cores and 4 threads.

In February, Intel announced plans to launch its next wave of Core processors in the second half of this year. "This is by far the most extreme desktop processor ever introduced", Intel boasts. However, the chips also offer more power at 112W instead of the 91W offered by the non-X processors.

Intel launched this series with two architectures - Kaby Lake X and Skylake X. The 4-core processors, the Intel Core i5-7640X and Core i7-7740X, will be built on Kaby Lake X, while the rest of the processors will be built on the upgraded Skylake X architecture.

The $1,999 Core i9 Extreme Edition processor, the i9-7980XE, is aimed at users carrying out heavy tasks such as VR video editing, 3D modelling, and special-effects creation, at serious multi-taskers, and at livestreaming gamers with deep pockets.
