Portland's Mayor Fundamentally Doesn't Understand The First Amendment

Both events are planned in a plaza that is managed by the USA government, which offers permits for demonstrations.

The mayor continued in his speech: 'Our city is in mourning, our community's anger is real, and the timing and subject of these events can only exacerbate an already hard situation.

Friday's horrific attack on a TriMet train has prompted a debate among Oregonians about the difference between free speech and hate speech. Police said the men were trying to stop a man who was yelling anti-Musllim slurs at two young women - one of whom was wearing a hijab - on the train.

The 21-year-old says Portland has a "white savior complex" and wants to heap praise on him, but the real victims are the women who were subjected to hate speech Friday. The attacks occurred hours before the start of Ramadan, a month-long Muslim holy period of fasting, prayer and charity.

Wheeler's call for the rally to be cancelled comes amid a wider debate in the USA about the First Amendment, often in liberal cities like Portland and Berkeley, California, and on college campuses, where violent protests between far-right and far-left protesters have derailed appearances by contentious figures.

Wheeler had called on the federal government to refuse a permit for the rally, which was to take place at Terry D. Schrunk Plaza on Saturday, June 10.

Mayor Ted Wheeler said he hopes the tragic killings will help shift the "political dialogue" in the USA, which has has become increasingly focused on debates over First Amendment rights as college campus speaking engagements by controversial right-wing commentators like Ann Coulter and Milo Yiannopoulos have been met with violent protests by groups opposing their presence.

Dos Santos notes that hateful speech is still protected by the First Amendment.

Christian "attended a similar far-right rally on April 29 called a "March for Free Speech" in East Portland", member station OPB reports.

The protest is organized by Joey Gibson, who has invited Kyle Chapman - also known as "Based StickMan" and "Alt-Knight" - to the event.

The chief said the goal of having the mayor's office and the demonstration organizers meet is to get everyone on the same page "so nobody is caught off guard and nobody is surprised".

Gibson told CNN Monday that the mayor "is using this as an opportunity to use these two dead people to silence us".

CNN also interviewed an organizer of one of the rallies in their Tuesday write-up.

The AP chooses not to mention it, but Jeremy Christian is a left-winger who supported Bernie Sanders and Jill Stein.

At this point we should be less inclined to think that the "hate speech exemption" refrain reflects a person's ignorance of the First Amendment and more inclined to see it as a deliberate effort to will an idea into reality and to change everybody's perception of where speech's legal limits actually are. We did everything we could to kick him out. "Get out if you don't like free speech". Christian has been charged with two counts of aggravated murder, among other crimes.

The men were identified by police as 23-year-old Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche and 53-year-old Ricky John Best.
