Cher leads tributes to her late ex-husband Gregg Allman

"My southern-rock heart is breaking".

Of all the albums Leavell has played on, he noted that Gregg Allman's Laid Back and The Allman Brothers Band's Brothers and Sisters "are probably the two records that I am most proud to have my name on".

According to the singer's website, he passed away peacefully at his home in Savannah Saturday afternoon.

There was no mention of Gregg Allman's eventual cause of death when rumors floated in April that he had checked into a hospice facility.

"It's a result of his reoccurrence of liver cancer that had come back five years ago". Gregg died at the age of 69 from health issues he has been struggling with for years. He announced on August 5 that he was "under his doctor's care at the Mayo Clinic" due to "serious health issues".

A month before that report, Allman canceled several shows that would have taken place next month, and confirmed that he would not be touring in 2017, but did not specify any reason for the cancellations. Foremost among Allman's influences as a vocalist, though, was the Mississippi-born blues and soul singer and guitarist known as Little Milton. The two boys endured a spell in a military school before being swept up in rock music in their teens.

Duane also worked as a session guitarist in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and NY, recording with Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, saxophonist King Curtis and other artists before talking Gregg into becoming the lead singer for Trucks' band.

But Allman went on to front the band on his own for decades after his brother's death.

In 1969, Gregg Allman and his older brother Duane Allman formed The Allman Brothers Band. They reached the pinnacle of the burgeoning music scene, partying to excess while defining a sound that still excites millions. So they put out a live album, At Fillmore East, recorded over two nights at a NY club. The album introduced fans to their fusion of blues, rock and jazz. All My Friends: Celebrating the Songs and Voice of Gregg Allman, a live album featuring performances by Allman alongside contemporaries Dr. John, Eric Church, Jackson Browne, John Hiatt, Warren Haynes and Widespread Panic, among others, was released in 2015. However, Duane Allman died tragically in a motorcycle accident in 1971, with bassist Berry Oakley dying in a similar accident a year later.

"This nearly cancelled the whole thing right here - he said, "by the way, you can't bring you're band", and I've got a kick-ass band, " Allman told me. So don't listen when you hear there will never be another album. And what's amusing, I think, is that the Allmans were so instrumental in the genesis of what we now call southern rock - you know, a genre that's associated perhaps unfairly with Confederate flags and pickup trucks and all this sort of iconography that suggests, you know, an unwelcoming or an outdated worldview - that it's easy to forget they were revolutionary inclusive at the time. Once in a while, he could even feel his presence.

"Sad, I grew up with the Allman brothers", said Mark Wakin, who lives in Kentucky. "I'll miss his singing and his organ playing".

Boyer would go on to play live and in the studio with Allman in various places, and Trucks became the drummer for the Allman Brothers Band.

Cher, who married Allman in 1975 and had a son with him before their divorce in 1979, was at a loss for words.

They had one child together, Elijah Blue, before Cher filed for legal separation in 1977.

It's really hard to overstate the impact of The Allman Brothers Band. It is set for release later this year, though it's worth wondering if anything will be altered with it now.
