Police responding to three "major incidents" in central London

But they said later that turned out to be an unrelated stabbing.

According to a report in the BBC, transport for London said London bridge has been closed in both directions due to a "major police incident".

And in the popular food market in south London, witnesses said they saw a man with a large blade. "He was stabbing a man.he stabbed him about three times fairly calmly".

"I thought at first it was fireworks". "We don't yet know the full details, but this was a deliberate and cowardly attack on innocent Londoners and visitors to our city enjoying their Saturday night". Police have closed a nearby railway station and told people to get away from the area.

Prime Minister Theresa May said she was being updated by officials on the "fast-moving" situation, adding: "I can confirm that the bad incident in London is being treated as a potential act of terrorism". Mrs May, who has been campaigning ahead of a general election on Thursday, was returning to Downing Street to chair an urgent national security meeting.

"We were in an Uber (taxi) going towards London Bridge and suddenly we saw people running". Deputy Editor of The Sunday Times, Sarah Baxter said: "Several pedestrians mown down as van weaved across road".

There were also reports that shots were fired with multiple people "seriously injured". He said it looked like she had her throat cut.

There are unconfirmed reports that least seven people have been stabbed as witnesses told of bodies "strewn" on the road at the landmark in central London.

Reuters television pictures showed dozens of emergency vehicles in the area around London Bridge.

"And then a couple of seconds later, about three police vans flew past. We saw a crashed van", he said. It said the blasts were believed to be controlled explosions carried out by police.

There are fears of another terror attack in the British capital after a van drove into crowds of people at London Bridge on Saturday night.

Sources quoted by Sky News have reported the incident is being treated as a terrorist attack.

A report via the bbc told of witnesses observing a van swerving off Borough Market into a crowd of pedestrians.

Jamie, a witness who was in Black & Blue in Rochester Walk said: 'We hid under the table and people came into the restaurant and knocked a bunch of stuff over, like the till. Other outlets, like the BBC, say only five to six people have been struck by the vehicle. "He hit about two people in front of me and then three behind".
