Fair shake? Refusal to clasp hands creates French Open flap

Murray remains optimistic, however, and is boosted at the tournament by the return of Ivan Lendl to his coaching set-up for the first time since March. Klizan hopes to make the third round of a grand slam for the first time since the 2014 French Open.

Alexander Zverev, the man seen as a potential French Open champion, crashed out in the first round on Tuesday as world number one Andy Murray and former victor Stan Wawrinka moved through.

"Physically, I felt good today, which is the most positive thing for me", Murray said after a 3-hour, 35-minute 6-7, (3-7) 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) second-round victory over unsafe Slovakian, Martin Klizan.

That said, it was far from a convincing performance from the world no. 1, who fell a set behind and had to break back at the end of the final set to prevent a tiring five-setter. "Sometimes I think also for my team it's hard to know exactly how I'm feeling or what it is that I need when I'm on the court". Got to practise with him a few times.

"When I'm frustrated or down I don't always project a lot of positivity on the court", he said. "I only had a week practice, so I am just very happy to be in the third round".

"For players to be in a position where you're in a slam and kind of boycotting playing on the court, I think would potentially cause a lot of issues. So I think if something was going to be happening and the players come to an agreement, if they think the name should be changed or whatever, that should be decided before the event €" before the event starts". It creates a bit of a buzz around tennis.

Murray, who will face Martin Klizan in the second round, hit 29 winners to wrap up proceedings in two hours and 33 minutes.

Murray said: "Juan Martín, in my opinion, plays better than his ranking". From 1-2 down he won five games in a row to take him into the third looking capable of another whirlwind finish, drilling the ball deep and wide, and all looked set for a quick denouement.

Klizan did not look a good bet to finish the fight - but he took the tie-break. "That's what happens", said Murray.

Svitolina was a quarter-finalist in 2015 but the big-hitting Kazakh also knows her way around Roland Garros, also making the last eight in 2010 and 2012. He plays a lot of drop shots and has quite an unorthodox sort of shot selection. It was pretty entertaining.

Murray could hardly have had a tougher start to his last tournament before Paris, when he lost in the first round to Fabio Fognini, a master of clay-court tennis, but he now has the chance to play his way out of the rut into which he has fallen in recent weeks.
