Huddersfield wins soccer's richest game, promoted to EPL

Huddersfield Town 0 Reading 0: Ward the hero as Wagner's men go

Huddersfield Town 0 Reading 0: Ward the hero as Wagner's men go

Liam Moore and Jordan Obita, two of Reading's best performers this season, missed their penalties before Huddersfield's Christopher Schindler slotted in the winning spot-kick. "I'm sure we can do it again".

"It's unbelievable. We put so much effort into the whole season", Schindler said.

Some of his methods have been unconventional - a three-day survival camp in pre-season raised eyebrows - but Wagner has now proven his pedigree as a young manager of some talent, and he will continue to make his name in the Premier League next season.

Huddersfield full-back Chris Lowe believes David Wagner will reject any summer approaches to stay at a club where the head coach has become a "hero".

It was a heartbreaking end to an incredible season for Reading, who were just as unfancied as Huddersfield at the start but ended up finishing third in Jaap Stam's first year as a manager.

After seeing his side reach the Premier League, with Holloway's QPR having been involved in their own fight to stave off the drop, Wagner was in the mood to celebrate.

"I think the manager did it flawless the whole season".

Speaking after their play-off final win, Wagner said: "By the way, Ian Holloway, all the best for next season".

"A lot of the pundits wrote us off before the season", said the 45-year-old German-born former United States worldwide.

"They've probably worked harder than they've ever done before and now they have got the credit, they're working for a Premier League football club and this town will be very proud to be involved in it next season".

They are certainly on their way and we will be hearing a lot about the Terriers in the days and weeks to come.

Jaap Stam insists he has not been approached about leaving Reading this summer, though understands you can not be sure of anything in football.

"We have to be focused on ourselves and this football club has to be focused on themselves", Wagner said.

"The penalty shootout wasn't nice but we hung in there and gave it everything".

He imposes a similar high energy, high pressing game to that which has brought Liverpool and Huddersfield Town such success and this can only add optimism ahead of Norwich's promotion push next season.

The promotion parade left the John Smith's Stadium early on Tuesday evening and headed for St George's Square, where the team arrived on-stage, to be greeted by a jubilant throng.
