Early on Sunday morning, local time in Manila, the family of a lone gunman who attacked Resorts World Manila, resulting in the deaths of 36 guests, identified the man as Jesse Carlos, 42.

The masked man stormed into the Resorts World casino and hotel complex in Manila on Friday with an M4 automatic rifle and a bottle of petrol, before setting alight a number of different rooms in the complex.

Police said the "apparently mentally disturbed" attacker, who engaged hotel security men and cops in a gunfight, locked himself in Room 510 where he wrapped himself in a blanket wet with petrol and set himself on fire before shooting his head.

"He is heavily indebted due to being hooked in casino gambling according to his immediate family", the police said.

The shooter unleashed a flurry of gunshots, but failed to strike any of the patrons and employees inside Resorts World Manila on Friday.

He questioned what the gunman was going to do with the $2m horde of poker chips he had tried to haul away. But he did not shoot anybody ... he just burned the casino.

Mr Abayalde suggested he started fires as a diversionary tactic and his next move was to try to escape.

The gunman asked him just one thing: to change the radio channel to the news instead of music, Albayalde said.

Duterte declared martial law in the south of the Philippines on May 23 in a bid to quash the rising IS threat, and said he was prepared to impose military rule nationwide if terrorism spread. But authorities have rejected the militants' claim, saying there is no evidence to back it and pointing out that the assailant shot no civilians during the two-hour ordeal despite being heavily armed.

The attacks turned a Saturday night in a crowded area of bars and restaurants into chaos, with police screaming for people to flee and lifeboats called in to help clear the area, the AP said. On Friday, a gunman entered the complex and set fire to its casino, triggering a blaze that left at least 38 people dead. "You are no longer in your right mind when you are addicted".

Footage next showed security personnel encountering the gunman in what appeared to be a stairwell.

She told them she had seen images of her husband on TV. Gomez said the gunman was shot in the leg, but after walking up a couple steps, the assailant walks back down to casually shut the door - nearly as if he had left it open by mistake. He made his way to a fifth-floor room, where he shot and kicked the door until it opened, footage showed. Recently, he was banned from entering all casinos at the request of his wife, Southern Police District Chief Tomas Apolinario Jr. said.
