The Philippines military suffered heavy losses in a 14-hour gun battle on Friday in the city that killed 13 soldiers and left 40 wounded in "intense" close-quarter combat.

"They are not fighting", he told a news conference.

CHR said the call is in consonance with the call of church, local leaders, and other sectors to prevent further damage to lives and properties in the affected communities.

In more than two weeks of fighting, at least 202 people have been killed: 134 militants, 38 troops, and 30 civilians.

The Agence France-Presse news agency reported the military as saying that the militants occupied about 10 percent of the city and were using bomb-proof tunnels and anti-tank weapons. In 2002, the United States helped Philippine authorities track down Abu Sayyaf leader Abu Sabaya, who was killed in that operation.

The Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL)-affiliated fighters used improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and rocket-propelled grenades to repel the assault.

In response, Duterte had vowed to expel USA military personnel from the country, but the leader appears to have found a more sympathetic counterpart in President Donald Trump, who has reportedly praised Duterte's brutal anti-crime program.

Colonel Herrera explained that the US Special Forces are not fighting and are there to provide technical support.

MANILA- The military is confirming reports that Maute brothers Omar and Madie were killed in clashes between government troops and Islamic State-linked terrorists in Marawi City.

Marawi is on the southern island of Mindanao, which has a significant Muslim population in the majority Catholic country and has seen a decades-long Muslim separatist insurgency.

The deaths take the number of security force members killed to 58, with 20 civilians and more than a hundred rebel fighters also killed in the Marawi battles.

The U.S. on Saturday confirmed that its special forces are assisting the Philippine military in the ongoing fight in Marawi.

Speaking to troops at Sultan Kudarat town in Maguindanao, Duterte said that the former Marawi mayor tried to talk to him but instead referred him to Peace Process Secretary Jesus Dureza, asking him first to clear his name.

The request to Facebook comes just before the military's goal of liberating Marawi by June 12 - the country's Independence Day.

Asked whether the assistance of the USA was made upon the request of the Philippine government, Herrera said the two countries already have existing agreements on military assistance.
