Shocking, says Rajnath Singh on Trump's cash-for-climate allegations

Virginia, other states create alliance to uphold Paris climate pact

Days after President Trump announced that he would be pulling the USA out of a global agreement to fight climate change, more than 1,200 business leaders, mayors, governors and college presidents have signaled their personal commitment to the goal of reducing emissions.

"In the absence of leadership from Washington, states, cities, colleges and universities and businesses representing a sizeable percentage of the USA economy will pursue ambitious climate goals, working together to take forceful action and to ensure that the U.S. remains a global leader in reducing emissions", the coalition, which now consists of more than 1,000 entities, said in a statement yesterday.

The US president said the deal was not tough enough on China and India.

· The US could rejoin at any time - Trump's decision is by no means permanent.

The Paris agreement was negotiated in the French capital on 12 December 2015; since then it has been signed by 195 countries.

· Other countries are stepping up their game to compensate - In response to Trump's decision, China and the European Union have agreed to set up a new alliance to reduce global carbon emissions. Elon Musk, founder of Tesla and SpaceX, made good on his threat to leave several of the president's advisory councils if the president pulled the USA out of the climate deal. These claims and others made in a speech that day have been widely disputed.

The Republican president, who had previously called climate change a "hoax" despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, said he thought the pact would harm the USA economy without providing a tangible benefit.

The White House also cited MIT research showing the Paris accord's impact on the climate would be "negligible" because it is likely to reduce global temperature rise by just 0.2°C by 2100.

The letter is called "We Are Still In" - as in, still in the Paris Accord.

But the more immediate reason is that Trump's feelings were hurt when French President Emmanuel Macron shook Trump's hand extra firmly in a deliberate attempt to symbolically confront Trump.

"Urban areas account for more than 70% of global energy consumption and Carbon dioxide emissions, mainly from buildings", said Esa Mohamed in a statement. To protect the environmental from imbalance, the worldwide community needs to be on the same plane.

"Paris or no Paris, our commitment to preserving the climate is for the sake of future generations", Modi said.

In the USA, the AIA pledged ongoing commitment to climate change mitigation "with or without the support of the United States government". Importantly, it is also out of step with what is happening in the United States.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said last Friday India is committed to protecting the climate, irrespective of the Paris agreement, but avoided a direct reference to the United States withdrawing from the worldwide deal.

The letter was coordinated by a group of organizations including "The B Team", co-founded by Virgin's Richard Branson, and Michael Bloomberg's Bloomberg Philanthropies, which has already promised $15 million to fund climate change efforts at the United Nations.

"Stopping climate change can only be achieved as part of a global and committed community". It is increasingly making better business sense to invest in renewables as their cost continues to plummet, and Trump won't be able to single-handedly turn back the unstoppable tide of clean technology sweeping the US. Today news emerged that the Acting US ambassador to China, David Rank, has resigned from his post in Beijing over the matter, reports CNN.
