Jury has begun deliberating in Cosby trial

Defense portrays Bill Cosby as a victim

Bill Cosby's defense attorney spent almost two hours in his closing argument Monday detailing inconsistent statements Andrea Constand made to law enforcement after an encounter Constand alleges was sex assault but the defense says was consensual.

Jury deliberations could begin as early as Monday afternoon after the defense in Bill Cosby's sexual assault trial rested after calling a single brief witness.

Cosby, 79, is on trial for allegedly drugging and sexually assaulting Constand, 44, a former Temple University employee, at his Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, mansion in January 2004. The sole witness called by the defense was local detective Sgt. Richard Schaffer, who also testified last week. A victim can "tell the truth and be wrong", he said, if they believe their version of events, even if that version does not accurately represent what happened. At that point, she claimed, Cosby made sexual advances toward her. He could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Cosby corroborated Constand's statements when admitted to giving her pills and admitted to a sexual encounter, Steele said. The case was not reopened until 2015 when Cosby's sworn deposition taken in Constand's civil lawsuit was unsealed, in which he said he gave young women Quaalude sedatives. He pointed to other private encounters she had with the actor and comedian, including a firelight dinner at his home, and the calls she made to Cosby after the incident.

While Cosby opted not to testify, prosecutors were expected to remind jurors about the statements he made in his deposition. And while she kept her distance from his trial in Pennsylvania during the first week, on Monday, Camille Cosby smiled widely while walking with Bill, and people are pretty uncomfortable with it.

McMonagle's tone became tinged with anger as he stressed Constand's misstatements to police about the day of the assault. "'The mother instinct kicked into me, ' she said of the moment her daughter confided in her about Cosby..."

Ms Constand said she had to return calls from the Temple University trustee because he was an important booster and she worked for the women's basketball team.

He added that Constand was always clear on the key facts: Cosby gave her unidentified pills he suggested were herbal, and then sexually abused her. She was Cosby's "lover", and they were in a year-long "relationship".

As Crime Online previously reported, both the prosecution and defense lawyers faced challenges in selecting a jury pool that was not biased on way or another, given both Cosby's longtime popularity and the high-profile allegations against him. "They are all that matter", said Montgomery County DA Kevin Steele in his closing arguments. The case and a barrage of similar allegations from some 60 other women have shattered his nice-guy image from "The Cosby Show" as America's Dad. Constand did make a brief call to Cosby at 9:45 p.m. March 16, 2004, he said.

McMonagle said he was working to "right a awful wrong" by representing Cosby, and said jurors looking to do the same should return a verdict of not guilty.

In the closing, McMonagle also sought to dismiss Cosby's attempts to pay Constand's tutition not as an attempt to buy her silence for a criminal act but a way to avoid a confrontation with his longtime wife, Camille.
