Sessions to appear before Senate intelligence committee

Donald Trump sits with Jeff Sessions (R-AL) at Trump Tower in Manhattan, New York, US.

Reed says "there's a real question of the propriety" of Sessions' involvement in Comey's dismissal, since Sessions had recused himself from the federal probe into contacts between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a letter on Saturday that he will appear before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday to address matters former FBI Director James Comey brought up this week in testimony to the same panel. Concerns have been raised about whether Sessions helped otherwise subvert the ongoing Russia-related investigations.

During a congressional hearing, Comey signaled that there were some yet unknown by the public reasons behind Sessions's recusal.

It was later reported that Comey privately told the Senate Intelligence Committee that Sessions was involved in a third undisclosed meeting with Russian officials during the campaign. If that's true, Democrats on the committee are probably salivating at the prospect of grilling him on that topic, especially if they can find a way to do so in open session (looking at you, Kamala).

The letter did not say whether Sessions planned to give public testimony on Tuesday or to appear before the panel behind closed doors. "We also were aware of facts that I can't discuss in an opening setting that would make his continued engagement in a Russia-related investigation problematic", Comey said.

The hearing will bring sharp questioning for Sessions and likely some uncomfortable moments from the Trump administration.

In January, Sessions was still a senator from the state of Alabama when he appeared at a hearing before his confirmation as attorney general. Sessions refused. He may also be under a cloud of suspicion after Comey, in his devastating testimony, suggested the attorney general may have failed to take appropriate steps to protect the Federal Bureau of Investigation chief. Comey wrote that Sessions did not reply to his request. "My impression was, something big is about to happen", Comey said, as he recalled the encounter.

Feinstein acknowledged she "would have a queasy feeling, too" if Comey's testimony was true that Lynch, as President Barack Obama's attorney general, had directed him to describe the FBI probe into Clinton's email practices as merely a "matter" and to avoid calling it an investigation.

Comey also has said Sessions did not respond when he complained he didn't "want to get time alone with the president again".

Though the Justice Department maintains that it has fully disclosed the extent of Sessions' foreign contacts previous year, lawmakers have continued to press him for answers about an April 2016 event at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, where both Sessions and Kislyak attended a foreign policy speech by Trump.

Trump at first maintained Comey had been fired as a result of discontent among the FBI agents he supervised, but a day later admitted that he fired the FBI chief as a effect of the bureau's investigation of Russian meddling in USA politics.

"There remain a number of questions about his own interactions with the Russians", Republican Senator Susan Collins told CNN Friday.
