Number of Louth women who travelled to United Kingdom for abortion in 2016

The vast majority of the women who gave addresses from the Republican lived in Dublin - 1,175. More needs to be done to help women in such desperate situations.

Women from Ireland tend to access abortion later than those living in the UK. The full report can be read here.

In 2016, a human rights committee ruled in favor of Amanda Mellett, an Irish-American woman who claimed that traveling from Ireland to the United Kingdom to kill her disabled child resulted in great emotional and psychological distress.

"The IFPA hears from the women behind these statistics every day". These figures are always going to be a conservative estimate.

She added: "Simply placing women on the abortion conveyor belt does not solve the underlying issues which lead to unplanned pregnancy and abortion".

The UN has also ordered Ireland to change its laws so that women can undergo abortions there.

Mr Harris said there was now an urgency to establishing the Oireachtas committee tasked with examining the eighth amendment, which gives equal rights to the life of the unborn and the mother.

Bernadette Smyth from campaign group Precious Life said: "This is proof that our strategies and campaigns are working". In November 2016, the Irish government agreed to pay compensation and provide counselling services to Ms Mellet, who was also denied an abortion despite receiving a diagnosis of fatal foetal abnormality.

Helen Deely, Head of the HSE Sexual Health & Crisis Pregnancy Programme added: "It appears that the rate of women travelling overseas for an abortion declined relatively rapidly between 2001 and 2007 and in recent years the decline has been more gradual".

She said:"Recent research shows that increasing numbers of women from the island of Ireland are making contact with online abortion pill providers". That figure was up almost 100% from the previous year. Instead, a woman must take the abortion medication provided to her by a doctor in a registered premises or clinic.

"Until then, they will continue to be forced to travel to other jurisdictions for this healthcare and incur costs of up to £2,000 for private treatment".

The report found one woman suffered complications which could have ranged from bleeding to uterine perforation and/or sepsis and would only have been reported up to the time they were discharged from the clinic or hospital.

On Tuesday, the United Nations ruled for the second time in twelve months that Ireland's abortion laws are nothing short of a violation of human rights.

The UNHRC ruling echoes the decision it made in June 2016 in the case of Amanda Mellet.

In a statement, Ms Whelan said, "I am very pleased with the decision". The Citizens' Assembly has given the Government a clear imperative to reform the law.

Hoctor said that, if enacted, this would bring Ireland in line with most other European countries.

The High Court in Belfast ruled in 2015 that this was incompatible with human rights law.
