Former UFC champ Matt Hughes involved in train crash, airlifted to hospital

UFC president Dana White told ESPN that Hughes was airlifted to a hospital but did not specify where the incident took place.

Hughes, who held the UFC's welterweight belt at various points between 2001-2006, was reportedly airlifted to a medical facility after his truck collided with a train.

According to Illinois State Police, a truck driven by Hughes was struck by a moving train in Raymond, Ill., at approximately 10:45 a.m. local time.

Hughes was traveling eastbound on the trail when he approached a rail crossing marked with crossbucks.

"Officers with the Illinois State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit are investigating the crash".

Hughes is considered one of the best UFC fighters ever, holding the 170-pound title twice and defending his title seven times.

Hughes registered a further 17 victories in the promotion, including wins over fellow Hall of Famer B.J. and future inductee Georges St-Pierre. We'll keep you updated on any new developments surrounding the matter.
