Rosenstein Says He Won't Fire Special Counsel Unless There's Good Cause

Newsmax CEO Trump considering firing Mueller

If President Donald Trump decides to terminate special counsel Robert Mueller, then it's going to get very ugly very quickly. If there were good cause, I would consider it.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said in separate testimony Tuesday that there was no "secret plan" to fire Mueller, nor was there cause. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was asked about news reports suggesting Trump was mulling letting Mueller go, but said he has not seen evidence he has cause to fire Mueller. Sessions is set to discuss the scope of his recusal from the Russian investigation, any meetings he had with Russian officials as a surrogate of the Trump campaign and the circumstances around the firing of FBI Director James Comey.

Speculation is swirling about whether President Donald Trump will remove special counsel Robert Mueller from his post.

"He called me because I've been very clear about the fact that Mueller hiring four Democrats - his first four attorneys are all Democrats".

"I think he's considering perhaps terminating the special counsel", Ruddy said in an interview with Judy Woodruff of "PBS NewsHour".

When White House Spokesperson Sarah Huckabee was asked about the claim, she responded, "Chris speaks for himself".

Collins' question wasn't the only time the Mueller investigation came up during Rosenstein's hearing on Capitol Hill.

Ryan argued Mueller must be allowed to carry on his investigation "because of what [Trump] did with Comey", referring to the president's decision to fire the former FBI director over the Russian Federation investigation.

Trump told NBC's Lester Holt in an interview on May 11 days after Comey was sacked that he fired him because "this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made up story".

"I think he's weighing that option", said Ruddy. The reason he gave is that it could be "within the scope of Director Mueller's investigation" and that "we don't want people talking publicly about open investigations", he said.

Neither Trump nor Attorney General Jeff Sessions has offered public support for Mueller. Rosenstein said there was no detailed document under questioning from Sen.

The topic of both hearings is the Justice Department's budget. Mr. Speaker - and Mr.

They wrote it to deal with these sort of situations, and I am confident that he will have sufficient independence, and it's certainly theoretically possible that the attorney general could him, but that's the only person who has authority to fire him. Suffice to say that Trump would be nuts to think that these flimsy objections would provide him with cover if he made the disastrous decision to dismiss Mueller and abort the investigation.

Now Mr. Gingrich has been joined in this chorus by a Trump confidant and golf-buddy, the President of Newsmax, who says the President is contemplating firing Mueller.

The president is nonetheless angered by the investigation, which he has described as a "witch hunt", The New York Times reported.
