Wind howling as final round at Erin Hills gets under way

Scheffler plays for the University of Texas, and Champ plays for Texas A&M.

Thomas became the first man to shoot a nine-under score in the history of the US Open.

After three days of benign conditions which have led to a feast of low-scoring, Mother Nature struck back with a vengeance on Sunday, lashing the challenging course with strong gusts.

But not long after he signed for his record score and an 11-under 205, he began to appreciate the significance of a 63 on this day.

Elsewhere, American Justin Thomas capped a record-setting third round with a sensational eagle at the last, moving closer to adding a maiden major title to an already glorious season of golf.

Koepka birdied his first two holes to get to 13 under.

The lead, however, belonged to Harman, who closed with two birdies and three tough pars. This leaves open the possibility for someone outside of the top five like Reed, who is tied for seventh to make a big move.

Thomas's 63 was in the third round, so by default, it wasn't to win, but it was lower relative to par; Erin Hills plays at a par-72. On the last hole I was miles out on the fourth shot and could've been looking at a seven or an eight but I hit a great chip to get a six.

This belies a fundamental misunderstanding of what the USGA is doing at Erin Hills, where wide fairways are indeed a bit more forgiving than incredibly penal rough.

He rolled in an 18-foot birdie putt on No. 5 from the edge of the green that broke so severely that he stood with his toes facing the hole and rapped the ball toward his left foot.

The lead, however, belonged to Brian Harman. He was one of only nine golfers under par, with the leaders set to tee of later Sunday. He can't be the youngest US Open victor, but a victory at Erin Hills would make the golf world stand up and take notice. "It's interesting to see where the USGA has gone with the U.S. Open, being a little more friendly than in years' past". It features a silhouette of Palmer in mid-stride, tossing his visor in the air.

At that point, he was leading by seven shots. Plus, if it was such an easy course, the top three players in the world wouldn't have missed the cut. He tees off later Sunday. Morgan shot 77 and, remarkably, still had the lead at 4-under 212. Even though it will be hard, I don't anticipate this being a blood-letting.

Brian Harman had the lead at 12 under coming into the day. For example, if Justin Thomas, Bruce Koepka, and Fleetwood remain in their three-way deadlock for the runners-up spot, their pool of money will be $2.67 million.

Players are on the course for the final round of the U.S. Open in blustery conditions at Erin Hills.

Birdies will be harder to come by on Sunday with winds gusting from 25-30 miles per hour (40-48 kph), bending flag sticks and moving balls over hardening greens.

The young player from Kentucky had every shot he needed yesterday.

Of the 24 players on the course early, only two are under par for the day - William McGirt and Jordan Spieth.
