Defending champion Murray stunned by Thompson at Queen's

Heather Watson gave World No.5 Elina Svitolina a scare before falling to a 6-2 5-7 6-3 defeat in the opening round of the Aegon Classic in Birmingham, but Britain's Naomi Broady defeated French woman Alize Cornet 7-6 6-0. "I can play better than that". Today's match was not good but I was much better in practice.

Andy Murray suffered one of the most embarrassing defeats of his career, as the world number one slumped to a stunning Queen's Club first-round exit against Australia's Jordan Thompson on Tuesday.

But Murray is confident he has rediscovered his rhythm in time to mount a strong defence of the Wimbledon crown he won for a second time previous year. "It has happened in the past where guys haven't done well here and gone on to do well at Wimbledon".

Wimbledon title looks uncertain at this moment for the Britt. I didn't create loads of chances. I didn't return particularly well.

The expectations at Roland Garros were muted for Murray, coming off losses to upstarts like Borna Coric and Fabio Fognini, and with Rafael Nadal playing at an otherworldly level on clay.

Last year's Wimbledon runner up Milos Raonic and second seed Stan Wawrinka have also crashed out.

It's been a day of big shocks at Queen's as the top three seeds all lost.

Murray was scheduled to face Aljaz Bedene, but he withdrew with a wrist injury just hours before Tuesday's match, leaving Thompson, who was at the west London venue as an alternate after losing in the qualifying rounds, to scramble to get ready for his unexpected date with destiny.

The Scot's play was tentative throughout and Thompson, serving well and making Murray play plenty of balls, thoroughly deserved his win.

The Australian sealed victory with an ace down the middle. I made some mistakes in the middle part of the tie-break, which gifted it to him a little bit... Obviously it's been a tough few months but when I'm playing I am just trying to concentrate on my tennis, and when I'm away from the court I'm just trying to spend time with my family and the people that mean a lot or are important to me.
