City of Orlando moving Confederate statue

Another Confederate Monument Bites the Dust

Schnurr is an encyclopedia of history knowledge and said she already knew there was a time capsule in the monument long before it was discovered Tuesday morning.

Citing the city's "commitment to inclusiveness", Dyer put forth a plan to have historians install an informational panel to accompany the statue and provide historical context about the Civil War.

Don Price, Greenwood sexton, said the box weighed about 3 pounds.

The Orlando Sentinel reports officials from the city of Orlando planned to begin disassembling, moving and reassembling the statue Tuesday. "It's time to take that monument down". "The air that we have now can really affect the documents. We're the keeper of the history and a lot of our history is right here", Price said.

The city will build a base and reassemble the memorial in a process that is expected to last about six weeks. The statue is being moved to Orlando's cemetery.

This story has been corrected to show supporters of removing the statue said they were deeply disappointed in the idea of a mural.

The Orlando City Council in 1893 - 28 years after the end of the Civil War - approved a 50-foot Confederate section of the cemetery.

The 106-year-old statue has been called a symbol of slavery by critics and has been at the center of debate for years.

"I think personally, because we put it there, that it should be given to us and then we can decide what we want to do with it", said Patricia Schnurr from the Daughters of the Confederacy, Florida Chapter.

The monument to Confederate soldiers outside a Tampa court administration building is staying put; after almost two hours of heated public comment, the Hillsborough County Commission voted 4-3 Wednesday to keep the memorial.
