Five London towers being evacuated over fire safety fears: Authorities

In a statement on Friday evening, Ms. Gould said firefighters and council officials had inspected the estate on Friday and said the buildings should be emptied.

The removal of homeowners is to allow "urgent fire safety works" to take place, local council leader Georgia Gould said.

The number of people to have died, including those classed as missing presumed dead, remains at 79.

A spokesman for the firm said: "In view of the focus on rain screen cladding systems and the insulation forming part of them, Celotex believes that the right thing to do is to stop the supply of Celotex RS5000 for rain screen cladding systems in buildings over 18 metres tall with immediate effect, including in respect of ongoing projects, pending further clarity".

Works to remove the cladding are expected to take two to four weeks.

"We need to do everything we can to keep residents safe".

The council is encouraging residents to stay with friends and family but promised to provide temporary accommodations, if that weren't possible.

Grenfell's exterior aluminum composite panel cladding is thought to have contributed to the rapid spread of fire through the apartment block - killing at least 79 people.

London firefighters and emergency workers who battled the Grenfell Tower blaze have been leaving messages and tributes to the victims at a makeshift memorial near the charred apartment block. "They say they began testing the cladding the day after the Grenfell Tower".

"At the moment they haven't done it and they are saying they will knock on everyone's doors when they are ready".

Tauranga mayor Greg Brownless said: "Naturally it's concerning if any of our buildings are coated in the same material as the Grenfell Tower but fortunately we do not have many high rises in the city".

One shirt bearing the London Ambulance Service logo said: "We refuse to forget you".

"We will identify and investigate any criminal offense and, of course, given the deaths of so many people we are considering manslaughter, as well as criminal offenses and breaches of legislation and regulations", McCormack added.

The cheap cladding was blamed for the fire spreading from one fourth floor flat and engulfing the entire building in the early hours of June 14.

Buildings in London, Manchester, and Plymouth are among those where problem cladding has been identified.
