London tower blocks evacuated over fire concerns

The dramatic decision follows urgent testing of the towers' exteriors, which was installed by the same contractor as the Grenfell Tower.

There is no hot water or gas on the estate more than a week after the blaze, and occasionally three loud whistles ring out - a warning for emergency services and residents who have ventured back to their flats to evacuate immediately because the remains of the tower could shed debris, or even collapse.

Residents clutching children, pets and small amounts of clothing and food emerged from five tower blocks to sleep on air beds in a local sports center after hearing on the news that their buildings were being evacuated.

Sayed Meah, who has lived on the estate for all of his 34 years, told CNN it was "just a scene of chaos" Friday night as residents found out - some only from TV reports - that they had to pack what they needed for "two to four weeks" and leave. Hashan said she has been anxious since Grenfell since.

"Why was it put through my door and not knocked on my door to tell me we were being evacuated?"

May said the local authority would be given all the means necessary to make sure people had somewhere to stay.

"Three to four weeks is what they are now guesstimating".

Cllr Rachel Bailey, CEC leader, said: "This council was deeply saddened to learn of the tragic events at Grenfell Tower in West London, and joins the nation in grieving for those who lost their lives". "I know it's hard, but Grenfell changes everything".

She said: "If the fire station wasn't around the corner then, I wouldn't be sat here talking to you know".

In an update early Saturday, Camden Council said they had secured "hundreds of hotel beds for Chalcots' residents".

Cladding samples from 27 high-rise buildings in 15 local authorities have failed safety tests in the wake of the Grenfell Tower disaster.

"We are looking at every criminal offence from manslaughter onwards", Detective Superintendent Fiona McCormack said.

The Muslim Council of Britain, who have been assisting the survivors of the fire, said that some of those occupying the 20 rooms in the hotel were left unsure of where to go next.

Around 600 buildings across the country are believed to have similar fire risks, of which at least 20 have been confirmed to have the unsafe and unauthorised cladding.

McCormack said all "complete bodies" had been removed from the burnt-out tower and there was "a bad reality that we may not find or identify everyone who died due to the intense heat".

"Our forensic search may not be complete until the end of the year", McCormack added.

The MULTI-agency meeting has taken place to discuss the safety of all Staffordshire residents living in high rise tower blocks.

May stressed on Thursday that all Grenfell victims, regardless of their immigration status, would be able to access whatever help they need.

Prime Minister Theresa May tweeted: "My thoughts are with residents being evacuated in Camden while their homes are made safe tonight".

"A very thorough investigation into the fire is underway and until that is completed we can not make any assumptions". The difference they can make really is life-saving - it's like having your own personal firefighter there in your home.

McCormack also said the fire last week started in a Hotpoint fridge freezer, but said the model had not been subject to a product recall.
