Senators respond to possible Medicaid cuts in Senate health bill

Trump Urges GOP To Repeal Obama Law Now, Replace Later

At a White House event yesterday, a reporter asked Donald Trump to comment on the Medicaid cuts in the Republican health care bill.

"Let's abandon more tax breaks for the rich, let's abandon cuts to Medicaid, and discuss what the American people are really concerned about: premiums, deductibles, the costs and quality of healthcare", he said.

If McConnell removes the funding cut from the bill, he may get support from Murkowski and Collins - though both have expressed concerns over other issues like Medicaid, as well - he risks alienating conservatives who believe such a provision is a requirement for their vote.

Democrats have unified against the bill and Republicans control the Senate by a slim 52-48 margin, which means McConnell can afford to lose only two Republicans. Listen to the full interview here.

In a floor speech today, Schumer said to Republican lawmakers and President Trump, "Let's start over".

The state of CT is out with new numbers about what the Republican health care plan would cost.

The Congressional Budget Office has predicted 22 million Americans could lose health care insurance under the proposal. Republicans cannot lose more than two of their 52 members if they want to have a shot of passage with Vice President Mike Pence casting the tie-breaker.

"This will be great if we get it done", the president said.

"Mitch McConnell poked his head out and tossed a bill out there that was widely unpopular in his caucus, and then he pulled the door shut, so they're back in secret negotiations this week and next week", the Connecticut Democrat told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program.

UC Health president Richard Lofgren sent a letter to staff members Wednesday that aimed to make sure employees "understand UC Health's objective and that they hear the collective voices of our patients, employees, and providers". Their health care legislation phases out the Medicaid expansion under Obamacare.

Longer phase-out of Medicaid expansion - 31 states plus the District of Columbia expanded Medicaid enrollment under Obamacare.

According to analyses from The Brookings Institution, The Kaiser Family Foundation, and the CBO, the formula for the Medicaid growth rate under the BCRA would lead to increased financial stress on states and detrimental outcomes for Medicaid recipients. In fact, their leaders did not delay their measure until just hours before what would have been a doomed vote.

He then predicted that the GOP would be able to pull together the minimum of 50 votes they will need to pass the bill, with Vice President Pence breaking any potential tie.
