Opposition candidate Meira Kumar on Friday launched her presidential election campaign from Mahatma Gandhi's Sabarmati ashram in Ahmedabad.

Summary: This is a historical fight as the nation is witnessing a presidential election based on ideology, she added. When pointed out that she does not have the required numbers to win, she said, "Wherever I go, people tell me that I do not have the numbers". She said the collegium members should only listen to "their inner voice and conscience" and act. "Kerala is a unique state, where all the MPs and MLAs except one have come together to fight the communal and divisive forces which are trying to spread communal venom in the minds of people", he said.

Hitting out at the BJP-led Centre, Kumar said her party was inspired by Gandhiji's thoughts to ensure the dignity of the Dalits, the tribals, and the poor.

DMK working president M K Stalin, his party legislators, Left parties MPs TK Rangarajan (CPI-M) and D Raja (CPI), Congress party MLAs, and leaders participated in the meeting.

Ms Kumar later visited M Karunanidhi at his Gopalapuram residence in Chennai.

Presidential candidates of both National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and United Progressive Alliance (UPA), Ram Nath Kovind and Meira Kumar are expected to arrive in Tamil Nadu on Saturday as part of their campaign for the July 17 elections.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has chose to extend its support to the opposition's presidential candidate Meira Kumar, after its leaders met here to deliberate on the issue.

Earlier, on arrival at the venue of the joint meeting of the Congress and DMK legislators, the former Lok Sabha Speaker was received by Chief Minister V Narayanasamy, his ministerial colleagues, Deputy Speaker VP Sivakolundhu and legislators of the Congress and DMK.
