A China Southern flight was delayed for five hours after a lady flung coins into one of the engines.

The passenger was traveling with her husband, daughter, and son-in-law, Beijing Youth Daily reported.

Members of the ground crew search for coins tossed into the plane's engine in Shanghai, China.

Neighbors of the woman said they suspected she was a Buddhist.

The China Southern Airlines captain later told passengers that if any coins had been sucked up into the engine it could have caused it to fail.

Passengers panicked once they saw an old woman throwing coins on the plane, one of which landed inside the engine.

Chinese police detained the passenger and released a statement. Five long hours later, the flight was able to take off without a hitch.

After a long delay to ensure the plane was safe to fly, the flight finally took off at 6:16 p.m. and arrived safely at its destination.

She was reported to the airport police by other air passengers. In short, she was reportedly tossing the coins while saying a prayer for a safe trip and equally safe landing for all aboard the flight.

The airline had to clear almost 150 passengers from the full flight bound for Guangzhou, originally scheduled to depart at 12:40 p.m.

The police, however, said that no charges will be pressed against her.

"After an investigation the involved passenger surnamed Qiu, said she threw the coins to pray for safety".

The plane resumed its route to Guangzhou at 4:53 pm, four hours later than the scheduled departure time.
