Whitehall taskforce to spearhead Grenfell recovery effort

Eight people died, but the death toll would have been higher if a police officer hadn't confronted the attackers with nothing but his baton, delaying them until armed officers shot them dead just eight minutes after the attack began.

"The offers being made, either they are out of borough in Queen's Park, SW3 or Mozart Estate, or they are unsuitable, with a view on Grenfell Tower for example", she said.

A coroner has said that the scenes inside the remains of Grenfell Tower are "apocalyptic".

Specialists working at Grenfell Tower have made 87 "recoveries" of human remains in the tower - but warn that could mean more than 87 separate people.

Meanwhile, an investigation by London's Evening Standard today revealed that Lakehouse, a company which maintained fire alarms at Grenfell House, is being investigated by police over work it carried out for Hackney Homes in the east of the capital.

Three weeks on from the Grenfell Tower fire and hundreds of residents are still living in emergency accommodation after refusing offers of temporary housing.

So far only 21 victims have been formally identified.

Sharma, who as Minister of State for Housing and Planning has overseen much of the recovery work on the west London tower block, was giving a statement in the House of Commons about the situation of residents and locals following the fire.

"We will use all the information we have, especially what we have been told by survivors and families, to prioritise our search where we believe we may find more human remains". But he said the cuts must continue because the government is still spending more than it takes in and the national debt stands at 1.7 trillion pounds ($2.2 trillion), or the equivalent of 62,000 pounds ($80,140) for every person in Britain. "However, as I've said before such is the devastation caused by the fire it may be that tragically we can not find or identify all those who lost their lives".

"We assume that sadly no one from any of those flats survived", Cundy said.

Father-of-two Mahad Egal, who escaped the fire with his family, told the BBC he was staying with friends because the hotel room they were offered was too small for four people.

We will act on and take any necessary action following our updated risk assessments and in response to any revised guidance from the London Fire Brigade that arises from the investigation into the fire at Grenfell Tower. The new arrangements are being undertaken with the consent of the new council leadership rather than being imposed.

It amounts to another admission of the scale of the failure at what was regarded as an effective council until the fire, but Labour said it did not go far enough.
