Hawks Will Not Match Tim Hardaway Jr's Offer Sheet

Carmelo Anthony With New York Knicks

Hardaway, who played his collegiate basketball at the University of MI, was originally selected by NY in the first round (24th pick overall) of the 2013 NBA Draft.

It's hardly surprising that Atlanta isn't interested in matching this offer. The following year, Hardaway upped his scoring average by posting 11.5 points per game, but he shot just 38.9 percent from the field and 34.2 percent from downtown. Atlanta now has a hole of about $25 million before reaching the salary cap floor.

The Hawks informed the Knicks they will not match the four-year, $71 million offer sheet on Tim Hardaway Jr. The Knicks continue to dig themselves deeper into financial disarray.

The deal gives the Knicks a young, talented guard, although at the inflated price of $71 million over four years. With dead money being thrown everywhere, Carmelo Anthony could very well be on the move.

The Hawks delivered official notification to the Knicks earlier Saturday, before the 48-hour deadline passed, according to sources.

If the Knicks can come to terms with the Rockets or another team on a deal for Anthony, the 10-time All-Star will have to waive his no-trade clause to finalize the agreement. This is pending any further moves Atlanta may make this offseason. They had traded him for Jerian Grant, then sent Grant to Chicago as part of the deal for Rose.

The idea to sign Hardaway is said to have been Steve Mills' the Knicks General Manager, who has been running the operations while the organization attempts to find a fresh president for the team following parting ways last week with Phil Jackson.
