Ian Poulter battles the elements to share Scottish Open lead

Rafa Cabrera Bello took out the European Tour event in a play-off with Callum Shinkwin after the pair finished at 13-under par.

England's Andrew Wall tied Dodt for fourth place, but the Queenslander clinched the final spot at The Open due to his higher position in the world rankings.

Having made the cut by a stroke, the Northern Irishman went into day four in a share of eighth place and picked up two shots, including a birdie at the 18th, as well as recording two bogeys, on Sunday. Cabrera Bello eventually defeated Shinkwin in a playoff. Seeking his third major win of the year, the 59-year German had a one-shot lead before dropping his tee shot in the water on No. 17.

Shinkwin's disappointment was eased by earning a place in Thursday's British Open, along the assurance of securing his Tour card for next year.

A awful second shot was heading inexorably for the burn but bounced to the right of the hazard and then shot sideways over it to finish on an upslope and offer a straightforward chip. Not only because of Shinkwin's collapse, but a piece of good fortune he got at the last in regulation play that was verging on the grotesque.

Dodt, from Gatton about an hour west of Brisbane, is a two time victor on the European Tour who appears to have found a new lease of life over the past nine months or so with several good finishes including a runner-up finish at the Australian PGA Championship and a 3rd place at the Hong Kong Open after struggling with his game for much of 2016.

"If I were to qualify for The Open my wife and I will be glad to change the holiday in NY and head south instead to Birkdale", he smiled.

"Under the gun, I didn't miss a shot until the last hole".

"I found myself particularly on the back nine, just a little bit mentally worn out", Dodt said.

"I have been fighting for this win for many years", he said.

Cabrera Bello will climb into the world's top 20 heading into the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.

It's Fox's third top 10 finish in his last three tournaments and puts him in fine form ahead of the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.

Cabrera Bello hit his own approach to within 10 feet, and while he missed his eagle attempt by a few inches, his tap in birdie was enough as Shinkwin narrowly failed to get up and down.

Poulter was seeking a 14th worldwide win - and first since November 2012 - but was always playing catch-up after three-putting Nos. I knew it was only going to go one way, up the leaderboard. I think I was overdue.
