Precise pay cheques have not been published.

"I completely understand that to lots and lots of people these are very large sums but we are a broadcaster, a global broadcaster, in a very competitive market".

The disclosure is not the whole picture.

Sharing a joke on Twitter, he posted: 'Happy BBC salary day.

This also means that the full earnings of some stars are not listed.

The Guardian pointed out that Norton's salary does not include the pay he receives from "The Graham Norton Show" because it is not by the BBC.

The BBC has a serious problem with gender pay disparity.

Two-thirds of the BBC's highest earners are men.

By contrast, the highest-paid female star, Strictly Come Dancing host Claudia Winkleman, only earned between £450,000 ($A738,000) and £500,000 ($A820,381) - a fifth of what Evans makes.

Fiona Bruce is the highest earning female journalist, making £350k-399k. The Radio DJ and former Top Gear host topped the list, while footballer turned pundit Gary Lineker earned at least £1.75m, and chat show host Graham Norton ranked third after taking home £850,000.

There is also a lack of diversity.

There are no Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic (BAME) stars featured in the list of 24 staff earning over £300,000.

The report is expected to reveal Humphrys earns far more than his colleagues Sarah Montague and Mishal Husain on Radio 4's Today programme. The BBC have stressed that its overall talent bill has been reduced by more than £4m over the last financial year, to £194m.

The in-depth review of the company's wages found 96 members of staff earn more than £150,000 for their work. I don't think you tune in to this show to hear us talk about these things but I had to say that this morning and had to be right and proper that I said that.

Hall was unapologetic for spending big on stars.

Admitting that some salaries come in at over £150,000, Hall said "we need to employ the very best - stars, great presenters, writers, actors, correspondents". "Talented people in front of the camera or microphone are critical for our relationship with audiences".

"I think what has happened today is we have seen the way the BBC is paying women less for doing the same job as the men".

BBC director general Tony Hall.
