Could a war break out between India and China - again?

Sikkim standoff: Pak game plan in focus as envoy meets Chinese ambassador to India

India says China has violated an agreed-upon status quo and is in violation of a 2012 boundary agreement.

Few Indians have heard of the Doklam Plateau located astride the borders of Tibet, Bhutan and India's Sikkim.

Under the circumstances it is ever more hard for China to convince the United States, which is not a natural ally in any case, that it is the victim in the ongoing border dispute in Sikkim, while India is the aggressor.

China can not afford to "lose an inch" of its territory, Chinese official media asserted on Friday and ruled out withdrawal of the PLA troops from the Dokalam area in the Sikkim sector to end a military standoff. Swaraj had also said in the Upper House that India is ready for talks with China if both sides first pull back their armies to end the tense standoff in the Sikkim sector.

On 20 July, Swaraj had spoken in Parliament about why India had to "intervene at the tri-junction point to stop China's unilateral attempt to change the status quo because this would impact our security". India, she said, has the support of all countries.

"India should abandon the fantasy of a long-term standoff at Doklam".

Recently, Indian troops objected the construction of a road by the Chinese troops in Doka La area in Sikkim and that led to a standoff between the troops of the two countries. Following boasts about China's military prowess and its ability to bring more force to bear at the remote site of the current dispute because of its greater "mobility and logistics capability", the editorial concluded: the "later India withdraws (its) troops, the greater the risk that it will face from a military counteraction and the more clout it will lose politically".

Warning New Delhi to not be stubborn, the editorial warns of "a potentially grave escalation of tension in the future" and that India should be "prepared for all possibilities". While the elites of India and China are competitors for resources and investment, this deterioration has been principally driven by India's ever deeper integration into Washington's military-strategic offensive against China. China will by no means agree to the withdrawal of troops from both sides in order for talks to be held. "China will never engage with what India calls "double withdrawal". That is a threat to our security", she said.

Mr Selva said deterring war is an exercise in influencing China's decision calculus, making diplomacy preferable to conflict and managing crises in such a manner that they do not unintentionally escalate. However, China alleged India entered its territory.

It asserted that India should not count on support of U.S. and Japan "because their support is illusory". China's anger and frustration with India flow from the latter's readiness to respond strongly to the diplomatic and security challenges that Beijing poses, while signalling that it is open to dialogue to settle issues causing tensions.
