House votes to support Trump border wall

And while Trump wrote in his tweets that the decision was arrived at thanks to "consultation with my Generals and military experts", Politico is reporting that there may have been another motive: a budget proposal to fund the president's cherished wall on the Southern border.

The GOP-controlled House has given tentative approval to a $1.6 billion down payment for President Donald Trump's long-promised wall along the U.S. -Mexico border.

Not included in the bill approved Thursday are funds for the Department of Homeland Security, which is in charge of the wall project and financing for which will be considered in a separate bill.

The beefed up defense spending would allow the Pentagon to continue military activities in Iraq، Afghanistan and other trouble spots and hire more troops while providing soldiers with a 2.4 percent pay raise.

Lawmakers did not vote on the wall funding separately but rather as part of the large spending bill which included funding for the departments of Defense, Veterans Affairs, and Energy.

The lawmakers' support helped send the $790 billion national security-focused spending measure to the Senate, where it is expected to be made over, if it can advance at all. The 230-196 vote saw five Republicans join all Democrats in dissent. Mexican officials said they won't.

Trump asked Congress for $1.6 billion in funding for the border wall, Breitbart Texas reported.

The fact that USA tax dollars were being allocated for the wall was not lost on Democrats, with Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Phoenix, saying earlier this week that the Rules Committee maneuver was a "deceptive, legislative gimmick in order to avoid a clean up-or-down vote".

The cash injection will pay for 32 more miles of border fence in Texas, 28 miles of levee wall along the Rio Grande Valley, also in Texas, and 14 miles of replacement fence in San Diego.

Still, a potential government shutdown battle over the U.S. -Mexico wall looms with Senate Democrats this fall.

One of those was Gosar's amendment, added late Wednesday night, to ban the Pentagon from giving guidance on or regulating based on the social cost of carbon, a measure of greenhouse gas emissions used in President Barack Obama's administration. Trump is pushing for a sweeping increase for the Pentagon and commensurate cuts of more than $50 billion, or 10 percent, from domestic agencies and foreign aid.

Gosar's amendment was adopted by voice vote.

The Democratic National Committee Chair Tom in a statement alleged that Trump's border wall is a massive waste of taxpayer money that will not make USA safer.

"Only then, will we have a secure border", Biggs said.
