The USS Nimitz and a second American ship dispatched a helicopter near an oil and gas platform and approached Iranian ships, the IRGC navy said.

On Tuesday, a US Navy ship fired warning shots at an armed Iranian patrol boat in the northern end of the Persian Gulf, according to two US defense officials.

Then American warships opened fire in what the IRGC described as "a provocative and unprofessional move".

In March, Washington said that Iranian fast-attack boats came dangerously close to a United States aircraft carrier in the Strait of Hormuz.

But the Iran state-sponsored IRNA news agency claimed that the USA ships acted as the provocateur as they came close to an Iranian oil offshore platform.

A U.S. official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the Iranian boat was armed but its weapons were unmanned. The Iranian ships then started firing rounds into the water, away from the US ships.

No warning shots were fired during that encounter, but U.S. defense officials criticized the use of the Iranian laser.

Mr Araghchi said the new sanctions are "a breach of the deal in articles 26, 28 and 29".

The US legislation imposes mandatory penalties on people involved in Iran's ballistic missile program and anyone who does business with them. Democrats said the new sanctions would not conflict with the landmark nuclear deal between Iran and world powers.

On Saturday Iran's foreign ministry said the missile launch was part of "domestic policy of the country, deterrent and at service of regional peace and security".
