The real message in Trump's MS-13 speech

Donald Trump's Presidency

President Donald Trump's speech at Long Island Suffolk County Community College has been met with extremely polarized responses.

Trump also spoke dismissively of the practice by which arresting officers shield the heads of handcuffed suspects as they are placed in police cars.

'Like when you guys put somebody in the vehicle and you're protecting their head, you know, the way you put their hand over?' the president continued, mimicking the gesture.

Hours after the commander in chief seemed to endorse police brutality during a speech at a Long Island community college by calling on cops to be a little less nice to suspects, the police department begged to disagree.

"One by one, we're liberating our American towns", Mr. Trump said of the work to remove undocumented immigrants.

On his visit to Brentwood, New York, on Friday afternoon, President Donald Trump showed how little he understands the nuances of immigration, the signature issue of his campaign.

In one anecdote, Trump remembered a conversation he'd had with a law enforcement officer from Chicago he praised as a "rough cookie". You do something wrong, you're in more jeopardy than they are. "And we're not gonna do it, because of you", he told the law enforcement in the audience.

America is caught in an epidemic of police violence, and law enforcement must be reformed if it is to be stopped.

Since taking office in January, President Trump has taken to Twitter a few times to share his thoughts about violence in Chicago and he chose to address the issue during his speech.

"I can tell you, I saw some photos where [acting ICE Director] Tom [Homan]'s guys, rough guys, they're rough, I don't want to ... say it because they'll say that's not politically correct, you're not allowed to have rough people doing this kind of work". And we're sending them the hell back home where they came from.

"I know some cops who can't do their jobs because they have a pathetic mayor", said President Trump, to laughs and applause.

The Suffolk County Police Department quickly pushed back against Trump on Twitter: "The SCPD has strict rules & procedures relating to the handling of prisoners". If that was really what the President wanted to achieve, then this was a speech that deserves to be termed Mission: Not Accomplished. We call on the president to immediately and unequivocally condemn police brutality. "We can all respect our law enforcement officers without sanctioning unjust and illegal behavior".
