Disney Ends Partnership With Netflix To Launch Its Own Streaming Service

In a move we can only describe as "inevitable", Disney has announced an end date for its partnership with Netflix in order to pursue a streaming service of its own.

Disney's video streaming service is slated to start in 2019, while the ESPN-branded multi-sport platform will launch a year earlier.

The pullout means new Disney movies on Netflix, such as "Moana" and "Rogue One", have a limited shelf life. Disney announced it will end its distribution agreement with Netflix beginning in 2019.

Disney is upping its existing 33 percent stake in the company to 75 percent by buying out MLBAM, the interactive media and internet company behind Major League Baseball.

Netflix's current stock of Disney movies includes Marvel films such as Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange.

Walt Disney aims to take a slice of the video streaming market with the launch of its very own service.

Walt Disney Co (NYSE:DIS) released its third quarter earnings on Tuesday and saw its earnings per share drop to $1.58 for the quarter from $1.62 a year ago. BAMtech, founded by Major League Baseball, provides direct-to-consumer streaming services to MLB, National Hockey League and PGA Tour, among other customers. Plans are for the Disney and ESPN streaming services to be available for purchase directly from the companies, in app stores, and from authorized MVPDs.

Netflix will retain control over its Marvel superhero TV shows like "Daredevil", "Jessica Jones" and the soon-to-debut "The Defenders", as that is considered Netflix original content. Wall Street has assumed Netflix wouldn't be able to renew all of its content deals perpetually so making its own content will continue to be important for the company, Janedis said. The service's initial lineup will include Toy Story 4, Frozen 2 and the live-action adaptation of The Lion King. The new ESPN streaming service won't include National Basketball Association or NFL content, however, leading TheStreet's Eric Jhonsa to call it an "incremental move".
