In India a passenger train derailed, there are victims

Ten people were killed and dozens injured when an express train derailed in north India on Saturday, August 19, an official said.

"Around six coaches of the train derailed from the track and one of the derailed coach hit a house", the official said.

"When we did a site inspection, we saw some equipment of the railways used for track fix present there", Mohammed Jamshed, a senior railways officer, said.

Officials said they were not in a position to confirm the number of deaths.

Local volunteers helped police free passengers trapped in the wreckage. Minutes later, the Janata Express also derailed at the same spot.

Two National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, comprising 45 personnel each, and two canines have been mobilised to the accident site from their base in Ghaziabad.

Neeraj Sharma, a railway spokesman, said the incident took place near the small town of Khatauli.

"There is chaos and confusion and locals and police are carrying out rescue work", said Anand Kumar, a senior police official.

"I am personally monitoring the situation".

In New Delhi, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on Sunday said he had told the Chairman of the Railway Board to fix responsibility for the disaster by evening on the strength of prima facie evidence. He said, medical vans have been rushed to the site and all efforts being made to ensure speedy relief and rescue operations.

Some reports quoting locals said the driver of the train was not informed of the fix work that was going on.

Modi's government has pledged to invest $137 billion over five years to modernise the crumbling railways, making them safer, faster and more efficient.

Past year a train accident in Uttar Pradesh killed 145 and injured around 200.
