Singapore had lost to Malaysia in the SEA Games 50-overs tournament a week ago.

The jinx of not winning the "mother of all gold medals" in the SEA Games as the host came back to haunt when Thailand once again gate crashed Malaysia's celebrations of having won 140 gold medals here tonight.

But Ong Kim Swee, who also coached Malaysia when they last won the SEA Games trophy in 2011, told his players to keep a cool head against Thailand, the holders and 13-time champions.

In the men's singles quarter-finals, top Vietnamese badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh recorded a breath-taking 2-1 (16-21, 21-17 and 21-18) victory against host player Iskandar Zulkarnain and also the No. 4 seeded, thereby earning a ticket to the semi-finals.

The own goal put more pressure on the host in the eyes of about 80,000 cheering compatriots in the stadium where seats for Thai fans were limited at 5,000.

Shrugging off a nagging fever, the 14-year-old cleared 32.6m in the jumping contest.

"I'm so happy with the win".

In Langkawi, the Optimist sailing events crowned two young Malaysian champions, Nurul Shazwanie Mohd Saad in the girl's race and Muhammad Fauzi Kaman Shah in the boy's event before his elder brother Ahmad Latif Khan followed suit with the men's Laser Radial gold. Mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Lai Jemie took silver after losing to Thailand's Dechapol Puavaranukroh/Sapsiree Taerattananchai 15-22, 20-22.
