Pentagon chief lets transgender troops remain in service

Trump said the move by former Defense Secretary Ash Carter to end the ban on transgender service members had "dismantled the Departments' established framework".

"Thousands of current service members are transgender, and many have been serving openly, courageously and successfully in the USA military for more than a year - not to mention the previous decades when many were forced to serve in silence", he added. The tweets said there was no room in the ranks for transgender troops and that the government would no longer pay for their medical treatment. This is exactly what Trump's ordered when he signed the trans military ban last week.

A soldier based in Washington state and two young men who hope to enlist are among those challenging President Donald Trump's ban on transgender people joining the military. Once Mattis receives the report, he will consult with the secretary of Homeland Security, followed by providing recommendations to Trump.

"What this statement says to me is Mattis is following orders".

Mattis continued, "As directed, we will develop a study and implementation plan, which will contain the steps that will promote military readiness, lethality, and unit cohesion, with due regard for budgetary constraints and consistent with applicable law".

Despite promises to the contrary during the 2016 Presidential Election campaign, the Trump Administration has been anything but friendly to the LGBT community, as evident in the Department of Justice's rescission of guideline protecting transgender students from discrimination in school regarding bathrooms, the Administration's support of policies and practices that would allow discrimination against LGBT in the name of religion, the appointment of Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court, whose previous legal opinions indicate an antipathy towards LGBT relationships, and now this.

Mattis said the panel, which he will establish, will consist of experts within the Defense Department and Department of Homeland Security. However, military bosses have revealed their reluctance to support the U.S. leader, arguing that transgender soldiers pose little or no adverse effect on army cohesion and effectiveness.

In a story August 28 about legal challenges to President Donald Trump's ban on transgender people joining the military, The Associated Press erroneously described the Washington-state based Gender Justice League.

President Trump announced in July via Twitter his intent to roll back a lift by his predecessor's, Barack Obama's administration on transgender people serving in any capacity.

Tammy Duckworth, a military veteran who lost both her legs during combat, also criticized Trump's ban on transgender troops.

Mattis has changed Trump's before.

"If Secretary Mattis undermines the president's efforts to protect the privacy and safety of our troops from this radical transgender social experiment, I fear he'd alienate the president from his entire Christian and conservative base", Matt Barber, a constitutional attorney and founder and editor-in-chief of Barbwire.com, told LifeSiteNews. That directive gave Mattis until February 21 to "determine how to address transgender individuals now serving in the United States military" and called for "further study" of the issue even though there has already been extensive study on transgender service members.
