No injuries have been reported or buildings lost, but the fire has burned about 8 square miles (21 square kilometers) of sagebrush and scrubby pine trees along the Sierra Nevada's eastern front. Mandatory evacuation orders remained in effect for the Brace Canyon Park area of Burbank.

Subdivisions full of houses are within a mile of the flames, but officials say none are immediately threatened. A plume is looming over an Ikea store and crowded shopping centers in nearby Burbank, and is visible from Griffith Park and northern Los Angeles.

An additional evacuation was ordered in Groton Drive and Hamline Place east of Stephen Road, according to Burbank police.

Pets are being welcomed at all the evacuation centers, and officials caution that animals should not be left behind.

Firefighters in Los Angeles County faced another day of triple-digit temperatures as a heat wave that has gripped the state continues. Firefighters initially feared the flames would reach homes by midnight Friday.

Mayor Garcetti said he had "great confidence" the fire could be contained so long as the wind subsides; as of the weekend it had mostly done so.

Firefighters worked to surround the blaze as multiple choppers performed water drops "to take the heat out of the head of the fire", Scott said. Roughly 260 of those were from the LAFD, she said.

The neighborhood along Wornom Avenue near Sunland Boulevard in Sunland was also under mandatory evacuation orders, while Terraazas said Shadow Island Drive and Worman Avenue south of Sunland Boulevard in Sunland were under voluntary evacuation orders. An evacuation center has been set up for displaced residents.

Three structures had burned, at least two of them homes, but fire officials said they were confident they could tame the blaze unless winds picked up.

Police shut down all traffic on the 210 Freeway as the fire moved across the highway, officials said.

A massive brush fire in California erupted to 5,000 acres on Saturday, threatening homes in the area.

He also advised all homeowners in the area to clear any brush on their properties to give firefighters a better chance at savings their homes.

As of Saturday afternoon, more than 500 firefighters were on scene, and a large portion of I-210 remained closed. An evacuation center was established at Verdugo Hills High School, 10625 Plainview Ave, Tujunga. While no homes are threatened in nearby Burbank, authorities chose to evacuate the DeBell Golf Club on Friday, the report added.

As of 4:20 p.m., an unknown number of homes were at risk and crews were working to establish a line against the fire's spread.

Terrazas commended the work of the firefighters from numerous departments battling the blaze.
