National Football League locals: Taysom Hill claimed by New Orleans Saints off waivers

Also Sunday, linebacker Brandon Bell (Mays Landing, Oakcrest) was signed to Cincinnati's practice squad. And, perhaps most surprisingly, they cut defensive tackle Cedric Thornton, their biggest free-agent signing in 2016.

And setting up a visit with defensive lineman Quinton Dial, who started 26 games for the 49ers over the past two seasons but was released on Saturday.

Hill was one of only three quarterbacks to be claimed off waivers the day after final cuts occurred. That's according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Additionally, the Packers signed the following players to the practice squad: G Kofi Amichia, CB Donatello Brown, QB Joe Callahan, WR Michael Clark, LB Reggie Gilbert, DT Izaah Lunsford, LB Derrick Mathews, G/T Adam Pankey, S Jermaine Whitehead and WR DeAngelo Yancey. Hill was claimed off waivers by the Saints.

He is presumably just a snap away from earning the call-up to the active roster as Aaron Rodgers is backed up at the quarterback spot by Brett Hundley.

Bell, 22, enjoyed a solid preseason for the Bengals.

Odom (6-4, 262) was originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of Arkansas State by the Falcons on May 1 before being released on September 2. He was considered a candidate to make the active roster but was cut in favor of undrafted free agent Hardy Nickerson Jr.

Brooks, 6-foot-3, 259 pounds, is an 11th-year player out of the University of Virginia who has been selected to a Pro Bowl (2013) and twice named second-team All-Pro by The Associated Press (2012-13). The 6-4, 250-pounder was expected to join their practice squad again - he spent all of last season there - but could be fielding other offers.

If not, there's still a fair chance Gray is signed to a practice roster deal by either the Packers or another National Football League club.
