Mattis on North Korea: 'We Have Many Military Options'

Mattis added: "We are not looking to the total annihilation of a country, namely North Korea, but as I said, we have many options to do so".

He added: "Kim Jong-Un should take heed of the United Nations Security Council's unified voice".

The White House on Sunday rushed to take national security and economic measures against North Korea after confirming that the rogue nation had pulled off its largest nuclear weapons test yet.

Mattis' statement does not say the USA would not strike first - it actually suggests America's military might, because it uses the word "threat" as opposed to action or attack.

North Korea relies on China for approximately 90 percent of its foreign trade, and US-China trade was estimated to be worth about $650 billion past year.

Trump warned in a fourth tweet, "The United States is considering, in addition to other options, stopping all trade with any country doing business with North Korea".

"We can't do this alone, we have to be working with them, to see if there's any kind of negotiated solution, short of going in there preemptively and then causing millions of people in another country to die", she said.

"I did speak with the president", Mnuchin also said Sunday.

According to North Korea's state news agency KCNA, the bomb's explosive power is adjustable up to "hundreds" of kilotons and can be detonated at high altitudes.

The U.S.'s defense chief issued a stern warning after North Korea's latest claim of a successful hydrogen bomb test, further raising the temperature and the war of words between Pyongyang and Washington.

South Korean officials watch news broadcasts showing North Korea's leader Kim Jong-Un, at the Korea Meteorological Administration in Seoul on September 3, 2017.

The council announced it would be having an emergency meeting to discuss the developments.

His comments are coming after leaders around the world jointly condemned North Korea's testing of its sixth nuclear missile. South Korean President Moon Jae-In has called for engaging with Pyongyang, but has recently adopted a more hostile stance toward North Korea over its frequent missile tests.

The weapon tested last night was a fusion bomb, also called a hydrogen bomb or thermonuclear weapon.

We had a small group national security meeting today with the president and the vice-president about the latest provocation on the Korean peninsula. "It also underlines yet again the urgent need for the global community to act on putting in place a legally binding ban on nuclear testing once and for all".

Trump tweeted that North Korea is a "great threat and embarrassment to China, which is trying to help but with little success".

North Korea's state-run television broadcast a special bulletin Sunday afternoon to announce the test. The Kim regime asserted that it had the capability to fix the weapon onto an intercontinental ballistic missile.
